Good grief! I'm posting a feast in time to enjoy it.
In the midst of a Grand Tour of europe on the 15th of October in 1764 Edward Gibbon watched as a group of franciscan friars ("bare footed fryars") sang in the ruined Temple of Jupiter in Rome. The scene inspired him to begin work on his 6 volume The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.Gibbon described his initial experience in Rome as relatively euphoric ("intoxicating"), so we'll assume that food and libations were both pretty good. Since this was the middle of truffle season, I'm sure it was!
